CSIR ASO Recruitment 2026 Selection Process

The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) has prescribed a three-stage selection process for the recruitment of Assistant Section Officer (ASO) posts. Unlike many government recruitments, there is no written examination conducted by CSIR. Instead, candidates are shortlisted based on their UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2024 performance, followed by a Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) and Document Verification.

Stage 1: Shortlisting Based on UPSC CSE-2024 Marks

In the first stage, CSIR will screen all online applications and shortlist candidates based on the combined marks obtained in the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE)-2024 Mains Examination and Personality Test (Interview).

Only non-recommended candidates of UPSC CSE-2024 who are listed on the UPSC Pratibha Setu Portal are eligible for consideration.

CSIR will shortlist candidates approximately in the ratio of 1:5, which means around five candidates for every available vacancy in each category (subject to a minimum of five candidates).

Key Points

  • Shortlisting is based only on UPSC CSE-2024 marks.
  • Marks of Preliminary Examination are not considered.
  • Only candidates shortlisted by CSIR will be called for the Computer Proficiency Test.
  • Meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee shortlisting.

Stage 2: Computer Proficiency Test (CPT)

Candidates shortlisted in Stage 1 must appear for the Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) conducted by CSIR.

The CPT is qualifying in nature, meaning its marks are not added to the final merit list. However, qualifying this test is mandatory to remain eligible for final selection.
