The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) has prescribed a three-stage selection process for the recruitment of Assistant Section Officer (ASO) posts. Unlike many government recruitments, there is no written examination conducted by CSIR. Instead, candidates are shortlisted based on their UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2024 performance, followed by a Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) and Document Verification.
In the first stage, CSIR will screen all online applications and shortlist candidates based on the combined marks obtained in the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE)-2024 Mains Examination and Personality Test (Interview).
Only non-recommended candidates of UPSC CSE-2024 who are listed on the UPSC Pratibha Setu Portal are eligible for consideration.
CSIR will shortlist candidates approximately in the ratio of 1:5, which means around five candidates for every available vacancy in each category (subject to a minimum of five candidates).
Key Points
Candidates shortlisted in Stage 1 must appear for the Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) conducted by CSIR.
The CPT is qualifying in nature, meaning its marks are not added to the final merit list. However, qualifying this test is mandatory to remain eligible for final selection.
| Particular | Details |
|---|---|
| Test Name | Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) |
| Total Marks | 100 Marks |
| Duration | 1 Hour |
| Nature of Test | Qualifying Only |
| Exam Mode | Computer-Based Practical Test |
| Conducting Authority | CSIR |
The Computer Proficiency Test is designed to assess candidates’ day-to-day office computer skills. The test may include:
These tasks simulate routine office work expected from an Assistant Section Officer.
Candidates must secure the following minimum marks to qualify:
| Category | Minimum Percentage | Minimum Marks (Out of 100) |
|---|---|---|
| UR | 40% | 40 Marks |
| EWS | 37% | 37 Marks |
| OBC (NCL) | 37% | 37 Marks |
| SC | 35% | 35 Marks |
| ST | 35% | 35 Marks |
| All PwBD Categories | 30% | 30 Marks |
Candidates failing to obtain the prescribed qualifying marks in the CPT will not be considered for final selection, irrespective of their UPSC CSE-2024 marks.
Candidates who qualify the Computer Proficiency Test will be called for Document Verification (DV).
During verification, candidates must produce the original documents along with self-attested photocopies uploaded during the online application process.
If any information provided in the application is found to be incorrect or unsupported by valid documents, the candidature will be cancelled.
After successful completion of all stages, CSIR will prepare the final merit list.
The final selection will be based on:
The Computer Proficiency Test is only qualifying; its marks are not included in the final merit ranking.
If two or more candidates obtain the same merit score, CSIR will resolve the tie in the following order:
| Priority | Tie-Breaking Rule |
|---|---|
| 1 | Candidate securing higher marks in UPSC CSE-2024 Mains Examination |
| 2 | Older candidate (higher age) |
| 3 | Candidate who acquired the essential degree earlier |
| 4 | Alphabetical order of the candidate’s first name |
Candidates who meet the eligibility criteria can apply online only through the official CSIR recruitment portal. Applications will be accepted from 23 June 2026 (10:00 AM) to 13 July 2026 (05:00 PM). No offline or other mode of application will be accepted.
